The final game of the
season was a little disappointing for the travelling team and their supporters.
The match was played in terrible conditions with a dust storm engulfing the emirate before and during the game. This, along with a gale, pinned the majority of the play in one corner of the pitch. The game opened badly for the visitors with Wasps stealing an intercept try in the opening play of the game. Muscat with the wind in the first half dominated possession and open play.
They continued with their new style of spreading the ball wide. Wasps were defending deep with their wingers falling far behind the game line to cover the expected kicks from Muscat. This left gaps on the outside and allowed Tyler, Kett and Work to make breaks and only some good covering tackles stopped Muscat running in scores.
Against the run of play, Wasps slipped through two tackles and extended their lead. Conversions were next to impossible with the wind. Muscat fought back with tries from Ronan Glennon, Simon Tyler and Jack Powell. The final phases of the first half ended with Wasps again forcing their way over the line by picking and driving well from the base of the ruck. At the whistle, the teams were tied at 15 points all.
The second half was a much different story, Xodus Wasps used the wind well to put continued pressure on the Muscat line. The visitors had difficulty clearing their lines and two further intercept tries only compounded their troubles. The traveling supporters continued to cheer in spite of Wasps taking a total 24 points by the end. Muscat could only respond with one try, leaving the score at 39-20. Muscat do finish above their northern neighbours in the league but ending the season with a win would have added something special to relatively successful year.
